Metamorphics Playing Cards
Progression One Step at a Time
Metamorphics is a playing card deck themed around the concept of evolution and the changes/mutations species went through to become what we recognize today. The hierarchy of the cars is arranged as: homosapien as the ace, primate as the king, tetrapod as the queen, amphibia as the jack, and the cell as the joker.
Personal Project
The Missing Link
Finding the answer to establishing a hierarchy in a card deck is the main challenge of the project. The other challenge is finding five appropriate candidates for the hierarchy and making sure each of the choices make sense.
A Progressive Solution
The answer for the project is looking at nature itself and seeing different types of hierarchy between different species. One of the best and most recognizable hierarchies between species is the evolution of how creatures evolved from sea dwellers to the people we see and talk to everyday. Using evolution as a basis for the project made finding a link between the cards very simple.
The Ace - Homosapien
Having humans be the ace is the most fitting choice considering homosapiens are at the top of the food chain.
The King - Primate
Monkeys, with their superior strength, agility, and intellect make the position of king in the deck a correct one.
The Queen - Tetrapod
Reptiles being the first to only inhabit dry land and pave the way for future land dwellers makes the position of queen a good one.
The Jack - Amphibia
Amphibians are the first to evolve among the sea dwellers, crossing into dry land and inhabiting both sea and land, which makes them a good fit for jack.
The Joker - Cell
The cell being the joker is the most reasonable considering it is the basic building block of life itself.
Final Thoughts on Metamorphics
Definitely one of the most interesting (and weird) projects to work on. Using biological evolution as the basis for a project is a first, but because of that it made for a unique take on playing cards. The hardest part of this project is of course finding how to build a relationship between the card hierarchies but the other not so obvious hard part is making illustrations that are quick to recognize and be visually appealing. Hopefully that the challenges in the project are addressed properly because doing something different from the norm is always a fun experience.
